Launched on 1 October 2018, the European EPEEC project (European joint Effort toward a Highly Productive Programming Environment for Heterogeneous Exascale Computing) has received €3.9 M in funding to develop and deploy a production-ready parallel programming environment. This will turn future exascale supercomputers, which will be overwhelmingly heterogeneous, into manageable platforms for application developers in different domains.

Car seats, mattresses and insulation materials are often made of polyurethane foams. The foaming process of the liquid polymer emulsions is complex. Fraunhofer researchers are now able to simulate the foaming behavior and reliably characterize the material. This also works with composite materials in which the plastic foams are combined with textile structures.

The infrastructure for charging electric vehicles is growing tremendously. By 2025, German automakers want at least 15 percent of their sales to be electric vehicles. Security vulnerabilities, however, plague the charging process. Mathias Dalheimer, an expert at the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM, warns that nearly anybody could debit charging costs to the userfriendly but insecure charging card of an unsuspecting user.
