Identification of Model Parameters for IPS Cable Simulation with MeSOMICS®

MeSOMICS® »Measurement System for the Optically Monitored Identification of Cable Stiffnesses«

Our MeSOMICS® measuring machine is an automated system for determining parameter sets for cables and hoses that can be used directly in the IPS Cable Simulation software. The measurement of effective cable stiffnesses is extremely robust thanks to optical monitoring and delivers automated results within a few minutes.

The standard system can be set up in both laboratory and office environments, as no special requirements are necessary. This means that the measurement of the required simulation parameters using MeSOMICS® can be smoothly integrated into the use of IPS Cable Simulation. We provide support with regular updates and maintenance.

You Supply the Sample – We Supply the Data: Our Services with MeSOMICS®

We also provide measurements of your samples with our MeSOMICS® systems as a service here at Fraunhofer ITWM. A typical measurement job is usually completed within a few days. You will then receive the complete set of stiffnesses for simulation in IPS Cable Simulation.

Our services with MeSOMICS® include the determination of effective stiffnesses under various conditions. We provide measurements at temperatures from -35°C to +130°C and the determination of pressure-dependent parameters of hoses under internal pressure up to 1000 bar.

In addition to our measurement services, we also offer comprehensive research and development (R&D) services with MeSOMICS®. For example, we use our expertise to support automotive manufacturers and their suppliers as well as Cable and hose producers.

Fully Automatic Measurement and Data Evaluation

The IPS Cable Simulation software, which we co-developed at the Fraunhofer ITWM, enables the interactive and realistic simulation of highly flexible components such as cables and hoses for assembly and operation simulations. In order to correctly predict the deformation of cables and hoses, it is necessary to determine the effective stiffnesses as model parameters.

Our measuring machine impresses with its simple handling and fully automatic data evaluation - for fast and reliable results. The samples can be inserted quickly and easily, the subsequent measurement is fully automatic and the model parameters required for IPS Cable Simulation are automatically derived from the recorded data. In addition to the geometric dimensions and length density, a complete data set for IPS Cable Simulation includes the effective stiffnesses:

  • Bending Stiffness
  • Torsional Stiffness
  • Tensile Stiffness

MeSOMICS® provides this data directly for use in IPS Cable Simulation.

Reliable Bending Test with Small Radii: The Core of MeSOMiCS®

The bending test  for flexible cables is the heart of MeSOMICS® and especially tailored for flexible cables. It is characterized by a large validity range and measurements at practice-relevant bending radii. With the help of an innovative evaluation based on a non-linear structural model, we identify the effective stiffness of the test specimen from the recorded data (force and moment measurements as well as optical images).

With standard tests such as the three-point bending test, tests with small bending radii – i.e. large bending curvatures – are not permissible and the associated evaluation is subject to errors.
